2004 Winner

Wendy Gladden

Wendy Gladdens was awarded the Laurie Bunn Award for her outstanding work in relation to Walk to School projects at the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham. At the time of the award Wendy had worked for the Borough since June 1985 and specifically in the field of Road Safety Education from May 1993.

Wendy always works hard on her own projects and selflessly supports others in theirs. The award is however in recognition of the work she has carried out for the Borough’s Walk to School projects. Wendy found that whilst schools were more than happy to accept the free Walk to School resources that supported the project, they were reluctant to provide basic data in return.

As a result Wendy developed simplified monitoring procedures, and provided incentives that would encourage the schools to participate. As a result, in October 2003, 22 schools took part in Walk to School Week and all but one, returned a full set of 3 forms, identifying their pupils mode of travel, pre, during and after Walk to School Week itself. Wendy’s work was recognised by Living Streets who have used her evaluation methods as an example of good practice within their literature.
