2005 Winner Phil Emmans was awarded the Laurie Bunn Road Safety Award to recognise his outstanding contribution to road safety and casualty reduction in London. Phil Emmans has dedicated much of his career as a Road Safety Officer to developing and sharing his extensive knowledge of the practical aspects of In Car Safety. He was instrumental in the delivery of high quality training across London (funded by Transport for London), enabling individual boroughs to actively promote the correct fitting and advice services to their residents. Retailers such as Mothercare, Adams World and Halfords have received training from Phil in order to ensure that they provide the correct equipment to their customers. Car manufacturers such as Honda have also consulted him for his expertise. During his career as a Road Safety Officer at Enfield, Phil set up the first In Car Safety Advice Centre in London, providing a free “try before you buy” service. Many London borough’s have since followed Phil’s lead and have set up their own Advice Centres, enabling parents throughout London to receive invaluable advice regarding fitting the correct child restraint for their car. Phil appears regularly on national television; and is part of a regular feature on the annual GMTV car seat safety week, and in magazines such as Practical Parenting and Mother and Baby. Chairman of the LAPC Mr Brian Marsh said: “Phil Emmans is the face of car seat safety across London. It is impossible to quantify just how many lives he has saved during his career. This award is to recognise his lifetime of achievement spent working in this field.”
