Dilek Sabri

Dilek Sabri was awarded the Laurie Bunn Road Safety Award to recognise her outstanding contribution to road safety and casualty reduction in London.

At the time of receiving the award Dilek Sabri had been a Road Safety Officer at the London Borough of Haringey for 13 years and was awarded the Laurie Bunn Award for the work she carried out with the large and thriving Turkish community that exists in Haringey.

She is a member of a road safety forum headed by the local police commander to address issues related to the Turkish community and gave up her own time to act as a local adviser and co-designer of two leaflets on the subjects of In Car Safety and Anti Drink Drive. This work was also carried out with a Turkish officer who was funded by Transport for London (TfL) and the leaflets are now available London wide. At the time of the award Dilek was also helping a local Turkish driving instructor to produce a Turkish Highway Code (also with assistance from TfL).  

Further initiatives that Dilek ran included an intensive 5 hour driving theory course for local Turkish trainee drivers, and a borough wide road safety art competition for Turkish children.  She also worked with the Turkish Cypriot Community Association to organise a very successful Traffic Safety Day, which received coverage in the local press including the local Turkish press and radio.

Chairman of the LAPC Mr Brian Marsh said:

“Dilek Sabri has been awarded the Laurie Bunn award to recognise the outstanding road safety work she has carried out with the Turkish community in Haringey. Her innovative approach and commitment has lead to road safety resource improvements in Haringey and also across London. All nominees from other London boroughs were also of a high standard and received certificates of merit.”
