2007 Winner Travel and Road Safety Awareness Team Royal Borough of Kingston The Road Safety and Travel Awareness Unit at the Royal Borough of Kingston have been awarded the prestigious London Accident Prevention Council’s (LAPC) Laurie Bunn Road Safety Award for their outstanding contribution to road safety and casualty reduction in London. The award was presented on the 25th July at the St Bride Institute, London during the LAPC’s Annual General Meeting. The Borough has a proud record of innovation when it comes to engaging young people and was commended last year for its Junior Road Safety Officer scheme. In September 2006 a further innovation was developed to extend this engagement to the secondary age range. The Road Safety and Travel Awareness Student Council consists of representatives from each of the borough’s secondary schools. Two students from years 10 or 12 (non-exam years) are elected by their peers for the period of one year to feed ideas and concerns into meetings held termly in the Council Chamber. The students have generated some very positive and effective outcomes which include:
