In 1917 the objects of the
Council were defined as follows:
Courses of instruction for traffic
and transport employees.
The organisation of street traffic with a
view to greater public safety and efficiency.
The preparation of
schemes with regard street refuges. "Safety" notices on street lamps, etc.
for the education of the public, and to arrange effective
publicity:
a) Through the Press b) By poster
advertisement c) By pictorial and other education means for
children d) By cinematography films in picture theatres e) By a
"Safety First" Exhibition, to which the public would have free
admission.
Apart from the "Safe Driving" Competition other
initiatives included an "Essay" competition which was conducted in schools
involving 57,500 children. A "Safety First" Couplet for the best
couplet descriptive of the objects of the Campaign and design competition
for a "Safety First" emblem were also run. Campaigns aimed at road
users, railway travellers and workers and bus passengers were conducted
and supported by posters and leaflets.
A major part of the work of
the LAPC is educating the public by raising awareness of the problems and
solutions involved in road safety.
Over the years the Council has conducted many
successful and innovative approached to enhance the effectiveness of their
accident prevention campaigns.
